Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community was founded upon the spirit of giving with a 1954 bequest from Anna Bartels, the widow of a Lutheran pastor. For more than half a century, Bartels has been meeting the long-term care needs of senior adults in a comfortable home-like setting. Though primarily funded by resident fees, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community depends on additional funding to enhance the quality of life for our residents and help us continue to meet our mission of enriching lives through quality services and Christian care.
Anna’s dream is flourishing, and through the visions of exceptional leadership, Bartels has stretched to meet the changing needs and demands of senior adults and their families.

| Today, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community has evolved from a “home for the aged” to a multilevel retirement community, offering a full range of health care and retirement living services on one campus. Our chaplaincy program is at the core of the Bartels’ mission. Caring for the physical needs of the residents is in tandem with caring for their spiritual and emotional needs.
The future will bring more exciting changes. We are helping to change attitudes towards retirement communities by creating a community within a community. By offering a continuum of care – from a totally independent lifestyle to end-of-life care, we meet the needs of our community members. We invite you to join us by creating a legacy through which you will make a difference in the lives of our residents. |

Bartels' Annual Fund Campaign helps us meet the immediate funding needs of our creative therapy programs (horticulture, music and art therapy), our activities, chaplaincy, transportation programs, and some capital needs. Bartels is committed to providing the same level of care to all residents regardless of their financial ability. Our donors provide the generous charitable support that makes the difference, setting Bartels apart from other facilities that provide only basic care and senior housing. |

The 1954 Society is comprised of individuals, families, businesses and organizations that contribute $250 or more annually so residents may continue to receive all of the benefits Bartels has to offer. You are invited to become a member of the 1954 Society at any level. Your gift may be contributed at one time, or spread over the course of a calendar year. |
Anna Bartels Society donors make a difference by contributing $1000 or more annually to Bartels. In return, Anna Bartels Society members receive the satisfaction that their contribution has immediately gone to work in the lives of Bartels residents. You are invited to become an Anna Bartels Society member at any level. Your gift may be contributed at one time, or spread over the course of a calendar year. |

The Friends for the Future is composed of individuals who have chosen to support Bartels through an endowment gift. Planned gifts assure the future of our mission. We are grateful for each gift, and know how important it is to our donors to respect their wishes and assure that every donation made will be used to support the needs of Bartels friends and neighbors. Direction for planned gifts may be considered for the following: |
The Bartels Memorial Foundation: Established in 1984, the endowment fund strengthens Bartels with funds to meet needs of today’s residents and to assure care for residents in the future. |
The Bartels Chaplaincy Endowment Fund: Established in 1997, this fund supports Bartels’ Christian mission and commitment to serving the spiritual needs of its residents and assures the presence of full-time Chaplaincy services at Bartels in the future. A financial gift to the Chaplaincy Endowment, allows you leave a part of yourself, your values, and your Christian heritage to future generations. |
The Bartels Good Shepherd Fund: Established in 2009, this is a benevolent assistance fund designed for our residents who need additional financial aid to cover the full cost of their care. Your gift means helping to keep a promise to our residents and offers an opportunity to bless others through a generous gift. It’s the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor that adds strength and kindness to our mission. |

| What is an Endowment Gift? |
An endowment gift may be an outright gift or a planned gift to be received by the Bartels Memorial Foundation at a future date.
An endowment gift enables individuals to generously support Bartels within their means and to do so according to their financial plans.
Bartels' financial needs are more than can be met by annual giving and resident fees. Endowment gifts enable Bartels to meet the challenge posed by the rising costs of providing it vital services. Such gifts provide funds which are invested in perpetuity and earn income which is used to support the services of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
An endowment gift includes gift by will, real estate, life insurance or Life Income Gifts such as a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust. |

| What is a Bequest? |
| Making a gift through a will bequest is one of the simplest ways to benefit an organization such as Bartels. Meet with your attorney to discuss and update your will. Tell him or her exactly what you want to do. Be as clear as possible in describing what you want given to whom. It might be helpful to contact us before finalizing the details of your gift. Commonly, people state a specific gift amount, but it is not unusual for people to be unsure about the size of the bequest they will be able to make. In that case, you may request that a certain percent of the remainder of your estate be given to the organization after debts and taxes have been paid. |

| What is a Charitable Gift Annuity? |
A Charitable Gift Annuity allows you to support the ministry of Bartels while providing yourself with a lifetime income.
Here is how it works: It’s a simple agreement between you and Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. In return for your gift of assets, Bartels commits to pay you a fixed annual income for the remainder of your life. You will also receive a charitable deduction for a portion of the annuity amount. This deduction can be used in the current year the Charitable Gift Annuity is established or in the next five years. Once the annuity is established, you will receive the same payment amount for the rest of your life regardless of economic conditions or market fluctuations. Upon death, the money left over from your Charitable Gift Annuity is used to further the mission of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. |

| |
| What is a Trust? |
With a charitable remainder trust, you irrevocably transfer money, securities or other assets to a trust that will then pay you an income for life or for a period of years. If you wish, the trust also can pay an income to another beneficiary of your choice. At the death of the surviving beneficiary, the remaining principal in the trust can go to a charitable organization such as the Bartels Memorial Foundation.
A charitable lead trust is a trust that you establish either during your lifetime or upon your death. The income from the trust flows to a charitable organization, typically for a stated number of years. After that period, the assets inside the trust are then distributed. The fact that the assets will one day be transferred to another person means that this trust has one further distinction: it is a "nongrantor" trust, as opposed to a grantor trust. "Nongrantor" means the trust assets are not owned by the person who established the trust, and the assets are not going to be returned to him or her someday. A "grantor" trust is one in which the assets will eventually be distributed back to the donor. As a result, the donor is subject to tax on the assets. Your attorney or financial planner can give you information on these and other trust options. |

| How do I donate a life insurance policy? |
| You can donate a life insurance policy to us or simply name the Bartels Memorial Foundation as the beneficiary. For the gift of a paid-up policy, you will receive an income tax deduction equal to the lesser of the cash value of the policy or the total premiums paid. To qualify for the federal charitable contribution deduction on a gift of an existing policy, you must name us as owner and beneficiary. Purchasing a life insurance that will benefit Bartels is one of the easiest ways to provide for a future significant gift at a reasonable cost today. |
| |
| |
| How do I donate securities? |
| When you donate publicly traded stocks owned for more than one year to a qualified charitable organization such as the Bartels Memorial Foundation, you avoid capital gains taxes. Plus, you may take the full fair market value of the stock gift as a charitable deduction on your income taxes. If you have stock losses, sell the stock yourself to realize the loss and take the deduction for tax purposes. Then generate a charitable deduction by donating the cash proceeds of the sale to the Bartels Memorial Foundation. |
| |
| How do I donate Real Estate? |
| If you own property that is fully paid off and has appreciated in value, an outright gift may be the simplest solution. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift, avoid all capital gains taxes and remove that asset from your taxable estate. You can transfer the deed of your home or farm to now and keep the right to use the property for your lifetime and that of your spouse. |
| |
| How do I give to Bartels in a will or living trust? |

I give, devise, and bequeath to the Bartels
Memorial Foundation the sum of _____________ (or gift description /percentage of the estate.
